Acorn Activities
Please read below about some of the activities and projects, for people living with dementia, that Acorn have funded and supported:

Singing For Fun

People with dementia, for whom spoken response and communication in general can become increasingly problematic can become actively involved in vocal expression through singing, especially with well known and familiar songs.

Although it can be used as a therapeutic tool the wider benefits of such a group activity have been the value of peer support and social interaction for the person affected by dementia but also the carers and family members. The Harrogate group meets weekly and has become a hub not only for the singing and all the benefits that it brings, but also as a focal point for information, advice and most importantly peer support.  Please feel free to come and join us at Christ Church, Harrogate on Thursdays 11am to 1pm.

We have seen people laugh and cry at these groups, real proof that we are managing to communicate through the song and we have seen genuine friendships grow amongst those who attend, which increases the very vital support network that people need throughout this illness.

Holidays for Younger People with Dementia

These holidays are a chance for people to relax and enjoy themselves with support available that is not intrusive or excessive. The atmosphere stimulates conversation and friendship as well as providing those 'normal' holiday elements such as leisurely walks, cooked breakfasts and outings and activities that promote laughter.

The week away can not only revitalise people but also demonstrate to some people that despite the illness there are still many things they can enjoy and that social interaction is still important.

Regular Outings – an Extension of the Leisure and Wellbeing Work

This is a chance for people to take part in a variety of outings e.g. 'walking with lamas in Nidderdale' or a trip to Harewood house. Although carers are encouraged to come along, by utilising the skills of the Leisure and wellbeing worker and the trained befrienders from Dementia Forward we are able to offer support to people with dementia so that they can access these events. The simple outcomes here are those of feeling part of normal life, making new friendships and having new experiences.

Social Events

Similar to the outings this is a chance for people to come together for social interaction and peer support. It is satisfying to see people not only enjoying themselves but also supporting and advising each other. The people using the servicews of Dementia Forward almost become a community of their own and as such these social events offer the opportunity to mark such occasions as Christmas or the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Moving Forward Group

When people with dementia and their carers enter the services of Dementia Forward the hope is that they will feel supported throughout the illness. In achieving this, members of Dementia Forward do form very strong bonds with some people. Also during their caring role people's social groups very often diminish and are replaced by the peer support and friendship they find in the Dementia Forward services.

When a carer's active role ceases through bereavement or their loved one going into a residential home they often still need the support and friendship of the peers they have met.

Moving Forward Group is made up of such people, supported by volunteers and still a part of Dementia Forward.  The aim of the group is to support people through those often difficult times at first and then to encourage them to 'move on'.

The group meets for outings, lunches, theatre trips and sometimes holidays and it steers itself, simply providing the delicate balance between independence and still feeling support.

This service is set to expand across the Ripon and Harrogate District.  It is an opportunity for people with dementia and their carers to access activity, support, information and advice in a relaxed and informal setting.  The first of these cafes is running in Harrogate every Tuesday.  Each week there is a different taster session or speaker these have already included Tai Chi, reminiscence, mediation, community police, petting dogs, pamper sessions.  There are a variety of activities on offer or the opportunity to sit and chat over a cup of tea.  A support worker is available to offer information and advice and peer support is in abundance.
